When it comes to decorating a piece of apparel or imprinting a pen with your logo you need to know your artwork file types. Let’s look at the basic information regarding Vector files.

Vector: EPS, AI, PDF, SVG. Vector artwork is digital art composed of mathematical lines and curves. Think of the super villain Vector from the movie “Despicable Me” when he famously explains his name. “Vector : I’m applying for a villain loan. I go by the name of Vector. It’s a mathematical term, represented by an arrow with both direction and magnitude. Vector! That’s me, because I commit crimes with both direction and magnitude. Oh yeah!”

Thankfully Vector was defeated in the movie, but vector files are very important in the art world to produce the best imprint or decoration of your logo.

Vector images can be reduced or enlarged in size indefinitely, without loss of image quality. These files are usually made in Illustrator. Just because these files may have this extension doesn’t mean they are always Vector. Some of the time raster images will be placed within these file extensions and look like they are Vector. One way to tell is to open the file and zoom, and I mean really zoom, all the way in, and if you can’t see individual pixels, its vector.

Raster: JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP, PSD. These files are created in either Photoshop. Raster artwork is any digital art composed of horizontal and vertical rows of pixels. These are set to a specific pixel dimension (resolution), measured in dpi or ppi (dots per inch/pixels per inch).
